Cypher 3D

Cypher 3D

My first impression of this model is good. It seems to be very sturdy and made of quality components. And we have parts.

It comes with no electronics other than the motor and ESC which does have a BEC. I planned initially to put 65MG servos in it because they are very durable and perform very well in the T-rex 450. Unfortunately, they are too big. So I installed Futaba 3153 micro servos in it. UPDATE: I have learned that it is possible to install 65MGs in the Cypher with some mods.

I wanted to try the Logictech 2100/3100 gyro servo set and since it's the smallest and lightest gyro we have, I did install it. It holds very well. I'm still getting a little bounce back when I do a full rate pirouette and let go. I don't find that to be a big deal though. I'll work on fixing it, but, for now, it works for me. For general flying around it has a very nice feel.UPDATE: I haven't been able to get rid of that bounce in the tail...so I'm living with it.

The only receiver I had was a Futaba 146iP, which is way too big for this machine. I plan to put a Futaba 7 channel FASST receiver in it shortly. The 7 channel receiver will fit between the frames and have room for some foam. The problem with the 146iP is that there isn't really anywhere to put it. You'll see it in the pictures underneath the frames. I'm not too worried about it there because the landing gear is very strong and, even in a very hard landing, I don't think the gear will flex enough to let the receiver touch the ground.

The blades that come with the kit are good performers. They are made of wood with an excellent covering job. .  If I had to replace the blades, and these weren't available, I would probably try some Align HS1158 or HS1159 woodies.

I'm using some old Flight Power Evo 20 3S 1800 batteries with mine. These aren't the latest and greatest batteries, but they're light and they still work extremely well. The Evo 25 3S 2170 will also fit and should perform very well. The 3S 2500mah packs are definitely too big. UPDATE:  The Evo 1800s are still going strong. My son used them a zillion times in the Blade 400 and I used them another zillion times in the T-rex 450. These are good batteries. Just don't abuse them.
.

There is no setup on the ESC. It just works.

We decided to see if it would handle the wind. The palms on that tree are horizontal and it's howling in these pictures. While it's a handful in wind like this, it does as well as any model this size and better than some.
Windy flying

Overall, I really  like it. Not all machines give me the confidence to cruise around in the warehouse, but this one does. It is very stable, yet responsive.

Nathan likes it too!

Here's a shot of it in lighter winds with the Futaba 7 ch FASST receiver installed. It looks a lot better.

If you're looking for a model that is quick and easy to get flying with high quality, inexpensive parts, this is one to consider. The price is certainly right.
